Juan Pablo Montoya’s F1 career is seen by many as one of the quirkiest and one full of what ifs. He was talented and fast and yet he failed to have any significant championship success outside of his 7 wins in the 94 Grand Prix he took part it. At least part of the reason behind this was that he participated in F1 during Michael Schumacher and Ferrari’s dominant run of 5 consecutive championships. At one time, it was rumored that Montoya had even been offered a contract by Ferrari. Montoya has now spoken about the realities of his career.

I'm your host Dillon Shelley and first up on Formula World: Why Montoya Never Drove for Ferrari

Montoya began by confirming that he would have been interested in driving for Ferrari but explained why he chose not to pursue a deal with them

"If Michael wasn't at Ferrari, I would certainly have considered it, because Ferrari is a great team. At the time, Schumacher was the clear number one and I didn't want to join as a second driver"

He then gave some insights into his relationship with then teammate Kimi Raikkonen

"There were no big problems, but it was very difficult to build a good relationship with Kimi. He doesn't open himself up very much. We had meetings and other commitments, but it was all very surface level stuff between us"

He concluding by revealing the reasons behind why he chose never to return to F1 despite the efforts of F1’s then CEO Bernie Ecclestone

"When I left McLaren it was actually a closed book for me because there was nothing left in Formula 1 and that's why I signed with Chip Ganassi for five years. After that Bernie called me, but I quickly said I didn't want to go back to Europe"
