Is This The End of Retail Real Estate? // Gap, Inc., which also owns Old Navy and Banana Republic, is one of the latest among many retailers to report that they’ve stopped rent payments at their 2,785 North American retail locations to preserve cash during the current shutdowns. Other restaurants and retailers like the Cheesecake Factory, H&M, Mattress Firm, and Subway all preemptively requested some form of rent relief for the month of April, and several alerted landlords in March that they wouldn’t be paying rent at all for the month.
So with an already struggling retail real estate landscape only getting more difficult, what will happen to retail going forward, and is this the end of retail real estate as we know it?
