Vitamin D can help our bodies stay strong, even if we're not sick

Vitamin D can help our bodies stay strong, even if we're not sick CINCINNATI (WKRC) - Health care providers say there are a few things you may want to consider when it comes to taking care of your own health.

We’ve told you previously about IV vitamin C being used in the treatment of coronavirus.

Dr. Marc Orlando is a physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist at Mayfield Brain & Spine. He says we should all remember that vitamin D may play a role in helping our bodies stay strong, even if we’re not sick.

It’s often called “The Sunshine Vitamin D." Fifteen minutes of sunshine can give you a day’s dose.

If you’re low in it, Vitamin D3 is generally recommended.

A study by the NIH found vitamin D can help your immune system. It’s something we all need to help our bodies stay strong, and there’s some evidence it may also help you fight pain, especially back pain.

“There's a study out of London in 2016 that also showed people have had low vitamin D state. Of 450 patients in the study, 180 of those had received some type of infection or some type of spinal surgery,” said Dr. Orlando. “So that's 40% out of 450 that are vitamin D-deficient. In the normal age match population, it was less than 15% of people had surgery or spinal injections if they had a normal vitamin D level. So, clearly, there appears to be some correlation with back pain and vitamin D levels."

The best ways to get these foods in your diet is through certain foods, including dairy foods and seafood, such as salmon.

If you aren’t sure you need it, your doctor can take a blood test. Make sure to talk to your team on a virtual visit and ask what’s recommended.
