Australian-Chinese trade relationship ‘teetering on the edge of a knife'

Australian-Chinese trade relationship ‘teetering on the edge of a knife' Adoni Media Managing Director Leisa Goddard says the relationship between Australia and China “has always been very complicated,” but the Chinese ambassador’s threats to boycott Australian exports, “escalates it to a whole new level”.

Chinese Ambassador to Australia Jingye Cheng leaked a conversation with the Secretary of Foreign Affairs and Trade surrounding Australia's push for a global inquiry and China's threat of a boycott on Australian goods.

Mr Cheng suggested Secretary Frances Adamson "admitted" Australia could not initiate an independent international inquiry during the coronavirus crisis, despite the government claiming otherwise.

The Australian is reporting “the man appointed by the Morrison government to spearhead a revamp of ties with Beijing has quietly resigned his post as diplomatic relations deteriorate and China’s ambassador issues new demands for Australia to stop playing ‘political games’”.

“There is a threat there,” Ms Goddard told Sky News host Peter Gleeson.

“We are talking about reprisals against Australia”.

“We are talking about… Chinese consumers not using our exports," she said.
